Face recognition describes a biometric technology that attempts to identify an person by comparing a new image with a database of stored record. Also known as “facial recognition” and “face detection,” the technology was first used for security, but is now used for myriad applications including mobile identity verification for payment and surveillance-based systems intended to prevent crime and theft. The most widely used application is unquestionably automated photo tagging, which is used daily by millions of FaceBook and Apple customers.
