New Survey Finds Americans Favor Face Recognition to Combat Rising Retail Theft and Violence

Face recognition provider FaceFirst has announced that a majority of Americans are in favor of face recognition as a means of identifying potential shoplifters, thieves and violent criminals in retail environments, according to a new FaceFirst poll conducted between Jan 4 to 5, 2018.

According to a National Retail Federation report, 9 in 10 retailers have been a victim of organized retail crime, while 25 percent of retailers report that organized retail crime gangs are becoming more violent and aggressive than in previous years. Face recognition can be used to identify the presence of known retail criminals in stores.

The survey asked a national sample of 1,008 adults from varying ages and income levels their opinions on surveillance, public safety and face recognition. The survey found that only 22 percent of Americans think face recognition should not be used in retail environments to safeguard stores against serial shoplifters, thieves and dangerous criminals. The majority (56%) stated that face recognition should be used by retail stores to safeguard against crime.

In the wake of the iPhone X launch, which enables consumers to use face recognition to protect their own data security, American adults appear to be increasingly becoming comfortable with the technology.  A majority (54 percent) of Americans across a broad range of economic levels plan to use facial recognition to protect their personal data or already own a device that uses the technology, while 56 percent of Americans would protect their own home or apartment using face recognition if cost were no issue.

“As consumers are increasingly adopting face recognition to protect private data on their phones, they are growing more comfortable with similar technology being used to protect private and public spaces,” said Peter Trepp, CEO of FaceFirst. “The latest advancements in face recognition software empower retail security teams to minimize inventory loss while ensuring public safety.”
